NEH Fellowships

NEH Fellowships support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to scholars and general audiences in the humanities. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, and other scholarly tools. Fellowships support continuous full-time work for a period of six to twelve months. NEH Fellowships may not be used for: curricular or pedagogical methods, theories, or surveys; preparation or revision of textbooks; projects that seek to promote a particular political, philosophical, religious, or ideological point of view; projects that advocate a particular program of social action; works in the creative and performing arts, e.g., painting, writing fiction or poetry, dance performance, etc.; or doctoral dissertations or theses.

EPA Resource Conservation Challenge Program

Region 5's Solid Waste Program administers a few of EPA's many grant programs. Grant funding is provided to government agencies and non-profit organizations to promote waste reduction and the safe and effective management of solid waste.

EPA Region 5 is soliciting proposals that address the national Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC) priorities of increasing recycling of municipal solid waste; increasing industrial materials recycling; and greening electronics in Region 5 [Region 5 encompasses the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin]. This funding supports EPA’s strategic goal of land preservation and restoration. Applicants are encouraged to partner and collaborate on projects with other organizations involved in similar efforts.

EPA solid waste funds may pay for a new position, contractor support, the development and printing of public outreach materials, supplies, minor equipment purchases, and project-related travel (e.g., to conduct or attend workshops). Please note that EPA solid waste funds generally cannot pay for large equipment purchases or be used for building or construction.

NEH Challenge Grants

NEH challenge grants help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Awards are made to museums, public libraries, colleges, research institutions, historical societies and historic sites, public television and radio stations, universities, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other nonprofit entities. Because of the matching requirements, these NEH awards also strengthen the humanities by encouraging nonfederal sources of support. Both federal and nonfederal funds must provide long-term benefits to the humanities. Challenge grant funds should not merely replace funds already being expended on the humanities, but instead should reflect careful strategic planning to strengthen and enhance the institution's activities in and commitment to the humanities. Activities supported Challenge grants most commonly augment or establish endowments that support humanities activities in education, public programming, scholarly research, and preservation. Institutions may use the income from invested funds to meet ongoing humanities-related costs. Examples include: faculty and staff positions, fellowships, lecture or exhibition series, visiting scholars or consultants, publishing subventions, maintenance of facilities, faculty and staff development, acquisitions, and preservation or conservation programs.

Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) - Volunteer Organization Capacity Building

For more than a decade the Corporation—through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve programs—has worked to mobilize new generations of engaged citizens. In 2008, more than 3.8 million individuals of all ages and backgrounds will work through Corporation-supported programs to help thousands of national and community nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and local agencies to meet local needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security, and other critical areas. The Corporation anticipates awarding one cooperative agreement for approximately $5,000,000 to a national organization to develop and execute a plan to support and build the capacity of local Volunteer Connector Organizations. These organizations connect individuals with volunteer opportunities and support organizations and professional volunteer coordinators in effectively using those volunteers to create meaningful change in local communities.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Economics Workshops

The US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE) is soliciting Proposals for Federal assistance in sponsoring “Environmental Economics Workshops.” NCEE is interested in supporting Environmental and Resource Economics workshops in each of the following categories: (1) Dissertation Workshops – the goal of these workshops is to attract the best and brightest graduate students/new PhDs and improve the quality of current research topics in environmental economics. (2) Methods Development and Training Workshops – these workshops should provide guidance and training on a specific analytical activity of importance in environmental economics. (3) Current Issues Workshops – these workshops should advance the field of environmental economics by exploring current and emerging issues of national or regional significance . The total award amount is anticipated to be $500,000. Individual proposals must be for less than $200,000 to be considered.

Assistance agreements may be awarded for project periods of up to 5 years where appropriate. Individual proposals must not involve more than one of the above three categories (i.e., dissertation, methods development and training, and current issues). Institutions and principal investigators may submit multiple but not duplicate proposals. Individual assistance agreements may be fully or incrementally funded. Cost sharing is not required. EPA anticipates awarding 6 to 15 assistance agreements under this announcement, as either grants or cooperative agreements. There are no cost-sharing or matching funds requirements. However the degree to which the project budget effectively uses EPA funds and/or leverages internal or external matching funds will be considered as part of the cost-effectiveness evaluation criteria.

Deptartment of Homeland Security (DHS) Urban Areas Security Initiative Nonprofit Security Grant Program (UASI-NSGP)

The FY2008 NSGP provides funding support for target-hardening activities to nonprofit organizations that are deemed at high risk of a potential terrorist attack. While this funding is provided specifically to high-risk nonprofit organizations, the program seeks to integrate nonprofit preparedness activities with broader State and local preparedness efforts. It is also designed to promote coordination and collaboration in emergency preparedness activities among public and private community representatives, State and local government agencies, and Citizen Corps Councils. The UASI Nonprofit Security Grant Program will provide $15 million to high-risk nonprofit organizations. Each nonprofit organization may apply through the State for a grant award of up to $75,000. Grant recipients must meet a 75% Federal-25% grantee match requirement. Grantee contributions must be from non-Federal sources. Possible uses might include the purchase and training involved with Inspection and Screening systems.

Eligibility
Nonprofit, 501(c) (3) organizations that are at deemed high risk of a potential terrorist attack and are located within one of the specific FY08 UASI-eligible Urban Areas are eligible to submit applications through their State Administrative Agency (SAA).

Criteria for determining eligible applicants who are at high risk of terrorist attack include, but are not limited to:

• Identification and substantiation (e.g. police reports or insurance claims) of prior threats or attacks against the nonprofit organization or closely related organizations (within or outside the U.S.) by a terrorist organization, network, or cell.
• Symbolic value of the site(s) as a highly recognized national or historical institution that renders the site a possible target of terrorism.
• Role of the applicant nonprofit organization in responding to or recovering from terrorist attacks.
• Findings from previously conducted risk assessments including threat, vulnerability or consequence.

Not all eligible nonprofit organizations and UASI communities are guaranteed to receive funding under the FY 2008 NSGP. Allocation decisions will be made based on risk and how well applicants address program requirements through their investment justifications.

Rural Community Development Initiative (RCDI) for Fiscal Year 2008

This Notice announces the availability of $6,255,900 of competitive grant funds for the RCDI program through the Rural Housing Service (RHS), an agency within the USDA Rural Development mission area herein referred to as the Agency. The intermediary will be required to provide matching funds in an amount at least equal to the RCDI grant. The respective minimum and maximum grant amount per intermediary is $50,000.00 and $300,000.00. These grants will be made to qualified intermediary organizations that will provide financial and technical assistance to recipients to develop their capacity and ability to undertake projects related to housing, community facilities, or community and economic development. The intermediary must provide a program of financial and technical assistance to a private nonprofit, community-based housing and development organization, a low-income rural community or a federally recognized tribe.

NEH Small Grants to Libraries / Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience

The Small Grants to Libraries program brings traveling exhibitions and other types of public programming to libraries across the country. "Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience" is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Library Association (ALA), and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The exhibition is based upon a permanent exhibition of the same name on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y. The traveling exhibition and tour are funded by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to the American Library Association. "Pride and Passion: The African American Baseball Experience" has been designated as part of the NEH’s We the People program, exploring significant events and themes in our nation’s history and culture and advancing knowledge of the principles that define America.

National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) Electronic Records Grant Program

The focus of the NHPRC's Electronic Records grant program is to support projects that will lead to sustainable electronic records archives that preserve digital records with enduring historical value. Projects cannot use grant funds to digitize historical records. Applicants who wish to digitize records should refer to the Digitizing Historical Records announcement.
We seek applications for projects that:

1. Develop institutional capacity through program evaluation and planning;
2. Create institutional capacity with program start-up support;
3. Expand the scope of existing programs; or
4. Develop electronic records service providers that can offer reliable preservation services to archives.
   

We strongly encourage each application to include professional development components necessary for the success of the project. These may consist of basic or advanced e-records training for archives staff, agency records managers, high level administrators, IT staff, and others.

NHPRC support begins no earlier than January 1, 2009.
